I think part of being a good parent, is having time to yourself. Time to relax, chill out and recover. I think some time for yourself makes you a better parent, more patient and happier, it certainly does for me anyway. I was very kindly invited to stay over at the luxury, rural retreat, Bethnal & Bec for a night, and I quickly accepted. I invited my friend Charlotte, who is also a new Mum to her 6 month old son, Kylen. Neither of us had left our babies before overnight, so it was great to share the experience with her, and we spent most of the time just talking about them!
Bethnal & Bec are 2 luxury retreats owned by Chris and Vicky, nestled in a a village called Cottered in Hertfordshire. Both have their own private hot tub, huge, gorgeous baths, walk in showers, fully stocked kitchens and pantries, drinks cabinets, wifi, Netflix, log burners and much much more. We stayed in Bec, and we loved it. We also had a pull down cinema screen right in front of our bed. So it was a Gossip Girl marathon for us all night…
The idea of the retreats is that you can go away for a totally rural yet luxurious break, and have everything you need waiting for you there. Breakfast is included in your stay, you arrive to a lovely little breakfast hamper waiting for you to make in your fully equipped kitchen the next morning. Bacon, fresh eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, bread and an assortment of jams and cereals make up the hamper. There’s a store cupboard with pasta, cereals, sauces, noodles, etc, that are included in the price so you can use what you want from there. See what else is included here .
If you fancy something fresh, they have a menu you can pre-order from that they will have ready waiting for you in the fridge before you arrive. These options are chargeable, but extremely reasonable. We chose the steak for 2 package – I highly recommend this, the steak was delicious. They operate on an honesty based system, so you can either leave the cash for what you used (that’s not included, as mentioned in the above paragraphs) or you can transfer it. Everything is reasonable, even the alcohol, it’s not silly hotel or restaurant prices. And much easier than going out shopping to get what you want. Everything has prices on so you know what you’re spending beforehand.
Anyway, back to our night…We were picked up from the station by Vicky and taken to our retreat (they can pick you up and drop you off if you ask in advance and it’s much cheaper than a taxi. We had also booked a full body massage to have as soon as we arrived (the owners send over a list of local therapists, we used Emma, she was great!)
After our massages, we jumped straight into the hot tub with a glass of fizz and put the world to rights. Then it was back in the kitchen to cook up our steaks. The rest of the evening was spent popping popcorn, giggling and chilling in our lovely soft bed watching Netflix. We woke up totally refreshed from a full nights sleep, put the kettle on and I jumped in the bath before we cooked breakfast. After another quick dip in the hot tub, it was time to be taken back to the station by Chris.
We had such a wonderful relaxing time, and I couldn’t help but wish I was back there this morning when I was doing my 2nd load of washing before 9am.
Thank you to Vicky and Chris for inviting us to stay at their beautiful retreat, they’re so friendly and helpful, you can’t help but like them.
